Tuesday, February 24

Today we contended with the rain again as we were bused to Sedona, but were finally rewarded  with bits of sunshine.   We spent the entire day at three different locations (Bell Rock, Slide Park Rock, and Red Rock Crossing.)

A big lesson learned today was patience!  We finally got some great "photo ops" which showed up after waiting patiently for the sun to peak through the clouds.  Lighting is everything!  And when the sun is at a low angle (morning or afternoon) the texture and depth of a scene are emphasized making a better picture.   Think of how often we rush from one scene to another (while on vacation etc.) snapping away and sometimes being lucky with the lighting, and sometimes not.

Another principle is that photography is a matter of inches!  By moving a little to your left or right, or moving closer or further back,  I learned I could dramatically change a photo.  Also I am learning that an unusual angle may make for a more dramatic shot as the cactus on the left demonstrates.

I'm learning a great deal and having a great time. The people are funny, bright, cultured, widely-traveled, and INTO photography.  Elderhostel  generally puts on great programs.   And I would be remiss if I didn't mention Tim Harrington who was our resident "Ward Bond" representing Grand Canyon University our local sponsoring organization.  Tim's wisdom, good humor, patience, and organizational skills made our week painless and fun.

.We had a picnic lunch at Slide Rock and ate a hearty Mexican dinner in town at Casa Rincon before heading back to Phoenix for a 10:00 p.m. return to our hotel!
